Overcoming Barriers: Getting into your Park

In 2007, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park jointly commissioned some research with Cairngorms National Park Authority and Scottish Natural Heritage to identify barriers that prevent people from different backgrounds engaging with Scottish National Parks and National Nature Reserves.

This research involved pilot projects with young people, disabled people, people on low incomes and schools. The report identified ways to address these barriers, and practical support for planning a visit to the Parks was high on the list of recommendations.

As a result of this research, a Barriers resource pack –Getting into Scotland’s National Parks and National Nature Reserves - was developed. It contains useful information and advice to support visits to Scotland’s National Parks and National Nature Reserves, and includes resource sheets covering the practicalities of organising a visit, assessing and managing risk, building commitment, packaging experiences and a specific section for schools.

Below you will find the resource pack split into handy downloadable sections; just click on the headings that are relevant to you.

We hope the examples of how other groups overcame barriers will inspire more people from a wide range of backgrounds to enjoy a visit to the Park.
