CEO Update: 2012 in The Park

Fiona LoganHi,

2012 certainly started with a bang with the recent storms we all experienced. We witnessed some of the worst damage in years around the Park with major routes being blocked, property damaged and lochs at abnormally high levels. Our maintenance rangers have been working hard to remove debris from affected walking and cycling routes. They have managed to clear many sections of path but the work is ongoing as many trees will have to be removed. Thankfully the weather has settled now but it was inspiring to see communities and public organisations joining forces in the clear up operation.

Autumn CEO update 04/11/11

Fiona LoganHi,

It’s hard to believe we’re into November already - a huge amount has happened here in the Park over the last few months! You may have seen the media coverage of the recently approved gold mine application. There was lots of hard work put in by both Scotgold and ourselves on this application, and the local community are passionate about the opportunities an operating mine presents for the area. The story is being told in a documentary on BBC4, as part of a series of ‘Tales from the National Parks’. Great stuff!

The Cononish goldmine application has been a great example of the challenges we face both as a National Park and a Planning Authority. As guardians of this beautiful place, we have a huge responsibility to look after and protect the environment for generations to come. We also have a responsibility to make sure our communities thrive. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is a vibrant and living place so we must do everything we can to encourage sustainable economic growth but at the same time, not kill the golden goose, which is the natural beauty of the area!

Summer is here! 24/06/11

Fiona LoganHi,

Well, although the weather suggests something different, the calendar tells us that summer is well and truly with us!

During the main holiday period, the National Park promises to be busier than ever and our focus on looking after our visitors increases alongside our conservation and rural development work. Every year, more and more people choose to visit Loch Lomond & The Trossachs but this very welcome influx of visitors can bring its own challenges. Fortunately, we are well-placed to handle the pressure of numbers, particularly now that the numbers of National Park Rangers have been bolstered by around 25 volunteers who are out and about with our full-time staff helping members of the public make the most of their visits.

2011 The Year Ahead 13/01/11

Fiona LoganHappy New Year!

2011 promises to be another exciting but undoubtedly challenging year for everyone involved in the National Park. In spite of the wintry weather looking set to continue for a good few weeks to come, we’re still focussed on ensuring that the Park remains a safe and welcoming place to work, visit and live in.

Some significant landmarks lie ahead for the Park, with the introduction of a camping byelaw for the East of Loch Lomond, the adoption of our Finalised Local Plan, the introduction of a charging scheme to help towards the cost of maintaining services on Loch Lomond and some significant planning applications in the pipeline.
