Disability Equality Scheme
The National Park Authority commenced work on its inaugural Disability Equality Scheme in December of 2006, in line with its obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and the Disability Discrimination (Public Authorities) (Statutory Duties) (Scotland) Regulations 2005.
Under that same legislation, the Authority is obliged to constantly monitor, and periodically report on, the Disability Equality Scheme with a view to ensuring consistent progress on the Action Plan included in the Disability Equality Scheme. The 2005 Act also places the following obligations upon society in general:
- To eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under this Act;
- To eliminate harassment of disabled persons that is related to their disabilities;
- To promote equality of opportunity between disabled persons and other persons;
- To take steps to take account of disabled persons' disabilities, even where that involves treating disabled persons more favourably than other persons;
- To promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons; and
- To encourage participation by disabled persons in public life.
