National Park Local Board Member Elections

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority is looking for board members to represent five wards across the National Park (Cowal and North Loch Lomond, Breadalbane and the Trossachs, Callander, East Loch Lomond and Port of Menteith and West Loch Lomond and Balloch). Locally-elected members bring to the board the valuable understanding and perspective of the Park’s local businesses and communities but will also champion, represent and help deliver Park Authority objectives in the wards they represent.
 
Nomination packs are available from 6 May from Stirling Council's website and from local offices including, Stirling Council Election Office, Old Viewforth, Stirling, National Park HQ, Balloch, Argyll & Bute Council, Dunoon, Council Offices, Helensburgh, Aberfoyle local office, Trossachs Discovery Centre, Callander local office, Killin library, National Park Callander office, Drymen library, West Dunbartonshire Council Election office, Balloch library and Alexandria Area registration office.  
 
Candidates have to be over 21 and needn’t be resident in the Park or in the ward in which they wish to stand. If more than one candidate stands in a ward, a postal ballot will be held, with papers being issued on or around 10 June 2010. The count will be held in the evening of 1 July at National Park HQ in Balloch.
 
The board meets regularly to make strategic decisions about how the Authority fulfils its role in delivering the four National Park aims, including balancing the requirements for conservation and socio-economic development within the Park area. Individual members will also get involved in other activities such as: 
  • Achieving the Park’s objectives in conservation, visitor experience and rural development
  • Taking decisions on planning and development control
  • Financial monitoring
  • Representing the National Park Authority externally
  • Acting as champions for the Park and the Authority
  • Overseeing the development, approval and monitoring of the Corporate and Business Plans
  • Contributing to the leadership and strategic direction of the National Park
Stirling Council has been appointed to run the election and their Chief Executive Bob Jack is Returning Officer.
 
Appointments commence immediately for a period of four years. New board members will receive induction training and mandatory training in planning matters.
