Practical Conservation Projects
Working as part of a small team you will have the chance to get
involved in a variety of practical conservation projects. As a volunteer
you will receive a quarterly programme outlining upcoming projects. In
the past, these have included:
- Wildlife events
- Nest box building
- Squirrel transect training
- Guided walks
- Developing a tree nursery
- Constructing a willow dome
Each project is supervised by a National Park staff member (usually a Ranger).
Volunteers are also needed throughout the Park to help set up and man
stands at regular public events - anything from walking tours, community
festivals or craft workshops.
Skills, attitudes and experience needed
Enthusiasm and commitment are more important than specific
skills and experience. A concern for the environment, a willingness to
muck in and enjoy group working are important as you will have the
opportunity to learn skills as you participate.
Benefits to the volunteer
Undertaking conservation projects enables you to: help the
environment, meet people, work outdoors, visit beautiful locations, see
the product of your labours, enjoy a variety of tasks and extend your
understanding of the National Park.
Where?
Projects run throughout the National Park and transportation
is often provided from a central point such as Balloch, Aberfoyle or
Dunoon with points on route if necessary. Travel expenses to this point
can be reimbursed for public transport and mileage.
When?
Please refer to the sample Volunteer Programme above to get an
idea of the frequency of projects.
What to wear and bring
You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing that you
don't mind getting dirty and will keep you dry! We have a pool of good
quality waterproofs that you can book so you won't damage your own
clothing. If you are volunteering regularly and need personal protective
equipment, we can provide steel toe capped Wellingtons, a hard hat,
visor or high visibility vest.
You will need to bring your own packed lunch and hot drinks.
Any additional requirements will be mentioned on the Volunteer
Programme.
Age restrictions
Minimum age 18.
Who will offer supervision?
The member of staff co-ordinating the project will offer
on-site supervision and the Volunteer Manager is available for any
additional support.
Selection Methods
Complete and return the application form.
When you have received your welcome pack you can get started by
contacting the person running the project you are interested in on the
current Programme. Let them know if it's your first time volunteering.
The Volunteer Manager will also keep in touch with you to check how you
are getting on.
