East Loch Lomond Camping Byelaws Proposals
East Loch Lomond between Balmaha
and Rowardennan is one of the most popular places in Loch Lomond & The
Trossachs National Park for outdoor recreation.
The loch shore’s closeness to both the water and the road attracts many
visitors, often families and friends revisiting places first experienced in
childhood.
Unfortunately repeated use of the same sites combined with a minority of
people damaging trees, littering, lighting fires and irresponsibly camping has
led the National Park Authority to consider introducing byelaws to control
informal camping.
This will not only help safeguard the area for visitors and future
generations to enjoy but also make the area liveable again for locals who often
end up staying away during the best parts of the summer.
There are also proposals for improvements to visitor facilities along the
east shore. This will include car park upgrades, a camping area at Sallochy and
better information signage. Summer patrolling from National Park Rangers
and Central Scotland Police will continue.
Consultation Update
The National Park Authority undertook a 12 week public consultation on the East Loch Lomond Camping Byelaws
from 8 February to 3 May 2010. The consultation received 286
responses.
Responses came from individuals and organisations within and outwith the Park, including Scottish Natural Heritage, Ramblers Scotland, Central
Scotland Police, Community Councils, and local interest groups.
Overall the feedback to the
proposed byelaws was positive with many good suggestions on how to improve the
proposed byelaws. A consultation report has been prepared and is available to download below:
A paper was submitted with recommendations for consideration by the National Park
Board at their 23 June meeting. Click here to see the agenda and papers for this meeting.
The byelaws were approved by
the Board and they will now be subject to a further one month consultation prior to
application for confirmation with Scottish Government.
The notice for the consultation
will invite any person, including organisations or individuals, to make
objections to Scottish Ministers. This consultation will take place from 20 August 2010.
